The Making of The Tempest & Midsummer Night's Dream

The final cover.

Oh yeah ...!

This was the cover that ended up being used in the final book design! The image is cropped a little bit on the cover, and it's a veerrrry slightly different colour (more yellow in the shadows, I seem to remember), but this is basically the picture ^_^

Oh my god, I drew this about ... three or four months ago now? I cain't remember. I do remember it was a couple of pages [of comic] before I started on the section with Bottom with his animal head, so I wasn't used to drawing the donkey ... as such, this image took about two hours to edit together so that the problems I had with the head were sorted into a more or less convincing ... er, image. Originally, Titania was leaning on him, but now she's ... er, not. Um!

I learned during this comic why, in most illustrations of Donkey-Bottom, he is really rather well-built ... and it's because trying to fit a huge head onto a skinny body really doesn't work. Of course, MY Bottom is quite thin (never thought I'd be able to say that in context, hahaha). So I had a lot of problems!

.............. p194

... finished.

p177

I've .... I've just drawn an amphitheatre. *cough-hack-die*

To those who don't know - which I'm guessing will be about 100% of you - my absolute pet hates in drawing are (in order of lowest to highest Hate): feet-and-toes, chairs, curving scenery/things that involve circles, and stairs. So obviously, a ROUNDISH theatre COMPOSED OF STAIRS is not high on my list of likes. Oh god. Oh god. I haven't pencilled the lines yet, it's still at rough stage. IT COULD ALL GO VERY WRONG.

I had a count-down to the day I had to draw Bottom with his animal head (it was called D-Day, hur hur hurrrr), but THIS one sneaked up on me. I only realised today was Amphitheatre Day when I sat down to draw.

At any rate, all I can hope for is something that resembles an amphitheatre to some degree ... whine, moan, etc.

I have HOWEVER thumbnailed the entirity of the sequentials now. I finshed the buggers off (I hate thumbnailing too) the other week and now feel much better for it.

I'M NEARLY DONE I'VE NEARLY DONE THE WHOLE THING OMG.

Feelings of Pride ^_^

I'm always happy when my friends achieve something; it's a great feeling to see someone hit that target they've been aiming for.
Even more so when it's something they have really worked their ass (and their wallet) off on and when it's something that seemed pretty much unreachable.

When my friend Fehed first talked of filming parts of his SLG book 'The Clarence Principle', my honest feelings were: wow, that's an awesome idea, but a little unrealistic. I guess I've spent too long in the past around people who say things like 'we're making a film' or 'i'm writing a novel' and the results never quite come to fruition (hell...I'm one of them!)...but Fehed is not part of that world it seems.
When he wants to do something, he shuts up and does it. And so, for the last however many months he's been building a team, and just recently he did an actual shoot!

Click here for a thread with some photos and details

I'm so proud and happy for him. It's an amazing thing to do. This is something he wanted to do for the sheer self-satisfaction of it and to see if he could - and look what he achieved. It puts me and my talk of 'i'll record some songs one day' to utter shame ^_~

To cheers to you, Fehed. Congratulations and I can't wait to see the finished result!

Much ado about a new Shakespeare book! ^_^

Hello all! I though I should drop in here and let the community know that I have now signed up to start work on one of SMH's next super adaptations - Much Ado About Nothing! Something a little more light hearted than my earlier offering and I can't wait to see what wonderful Richard Appignanesi comes up with for the script abridgement. Some character work is already done, so you'll be able to spot snippets as they appear. I will start using the trusty ol' selfmadehero Livejournal progress blog… Continue

Good luck Sonia!

Not satisfied with taking her existing awards and nominations, Sonia Leong and Romeo & Julet have been nominated for another award in America. R&J is up for a Harvey Award in the weirdly-titled BEST AMERICAN EDITION OF FOREIGN MATERIAL category alongside these folk: Eduardo Risso's Tales of Terror, Dynamite Entertainment Exit Wounds, Drawn & Quarterly… Continue

The making of Hamlet and Romeo & Juliet

Character pages are building up.

I have been working on a few more of the colour section pages while putting the finishing touches to Violet, my comic for the DFC. That's a whole 'nother story ^_^

But yes, work is continuing and, next week, the ball really starts rolling as I'll be meeting with Richard and Emma to talk shop. I'm sitting in that strange, floaty place between projects; doing bits here and bits there, knowing that very soon I'll be incredibly busy - so you can't entirely relax. haha.

News as I get it! ^__^

About Manga Shakespeare

The Making of Julius Caesar

Julius Caesar is here!

My first book.

What a lovely day Thursday the 3rd of July 2008 has been. This afternoon, the sun shined brightly and the weather was fine as the intercom to my apartment rang. It was the postman on his bicycle with a very special delivery for me, my first graphic novel. Manga Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar is here. I am so happy to see the final form.

Go out, stay in, order the book, pull yourself up against a quiet spot by the window, or tuck yourselves in bed and read away. Let me know what you think, and most importantly, enjoy Shakespeare’s great and ambitious play.

^_^

Lucilius.

A wonderful little boy
Blessed with a joyous soul
Singing and dancing
Wherever it is he may go

A great little seed
For the future of the world
Smiling and skipping
To the very end of the road

A loyal little one
A brave little one
A beautiful soul
This seed is their life's hope

Julius Caesar coming June 2008

Ruby Blue.

Hey there,

News front is open, and it looks like this, my first book is finally done and ready to rock and roll for publication and a summer release this June! It’s all very exciting, yet at the same time surreal to be happening so fast. Julius Caesar has been something I’ve been working on for about 5 months and invested a lot of myself in physically and emotionally, in regards to the time spent visualizing it all and the metaphorical symbols and characterizations. I sincerely hope you like it and would like to thank everyone whom has supported me along the way, this book is for you.

Here’s a look at the cover artwork they’ve decided to run with for the first print, paperback edition. The colours are an artistic collaboration with fellow Manga Shakespeare visionary Robert Deas, whom is also putting an amazing re-imagining out on the shelves at the same time with the classic Macbeth (look out for it too!). Thank you Robert for the last minute pitch in.

So what does Caesar mean to me and what do I hope it means for you…To me it very much reflects a feeling of peace, redemption, sanctity and friendship. That all these themes are present in the story itself I hope is something you connect with, and realise the fragility of. Life is precious, enjoy every moment of it.

Trinity Blood fanart - "Don't make me do this..."

As I'm not sure when I'll have the time to actually ink / colour this, I thought I'd post up the sketch version for now.

A rare piece of fanart (I don't usually do fanart), Abel Nightroad / Nightlord, Trinity Blood. He's a pacifist at heart, so that's why he looks hesitant, and why I've titled it "Don't make me do this..."

I think I'll ink/marker/paint this when I've got more time to do so, eheh. I like having originals/natural media pieces of fanart to put up on my walls.
