Fair play to these cosplayers who pull off a scene from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night as... Rock Lee and Sasuke Uchiha from Naruto manga series. I found this clip randomly on YouTube, brilliant:

This *genius* clearly saw the connection between Hamlet and graphic novels. Here they have done a mash up of Kenneth Brannagh's Hamlet and Frank Miller's comic 300
Good work that man! They have time on their hands, but good work nonetheless:

When I was on AnimeXX today I noticed some great Romeo X Juliet cosplay. So I thought I'd share it with you.
This is Tybalt from Gonzo's Romeo x Juliet, played by Necoras:
Japanese stuff is cool... apparently. There is a film called Sakuran on later this month (from August 26th) at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London. It is billed as "The Anti-Memoirs of a Geisha... The tale of bad-girl courtesan Kiyoha... a warm-hearted and original tale of one woman snarling, biting and kicking her way to the top."
I doubt that the Japanese Ambassador in London could get a ticket! Oh well, maybe next time.
If you have the opportunity to see a Shakespeare play at a theatre you can't do much better than seeing a performance by the Royal Shakespeare Company playing at home in Stratford-upon-Avon.
They've just made it a bit easier too, as there is nothin… Continue

These dudes (I think they are Spanish, sorry if you are from somewhere else!) have filmed their own version of Hamlet (in English, with Spanish subtitles). They rock! Their costumes rock! I love the trailer!

Have you ever wondered how we decide on the setting of each of the Manga Shakespeares? Well it takes a few different versions and meetings before everyone's happy with how each play is staged.
Artist, Editor and the Publisher all have to be fully behind any staging – much like if you were putting on a play, the Director, Actor and Theatre Company would need to agree that it was possible on stage, it was interesting, made sense and people would pay to see it.
These are a few of the brilliant id… Continue

As mentioned in the previous post, I was at the Edinburgh Book Festival Promoting Macbeth with Emma Hayley and Paul Gravett and I did a live drawing whilst on stage. Here's a step by step of what I did. I only had half an hour to do this and it was in front of an audience so it's a little looser than I would usually draw but it seemed to go down well on the night. The background was done before the night along with the rough pencils but tight pencils, inks and shading were done live. Enjoy.… Continue

SMH have just returned from the Edinburgh Book Festival where Robert Deas (Macbeth artist), Emma Hayley (SMH Publisher) and Paul Gravett (comics legend) took the festival by storm with a talk about how Macbeth went samurai. It even included a live art demo and signing about how Manga Macbeth was made.
Paul Gravett has put a great report of the event up on his website, which you can read here.
Hello all!
You can easily imagine the artist (in this case, me) is panicking when the deadline is getting closer. However, when you panic more you want to do something else. I often go to play with my tegaki blog which you should create your blog entry not by typing but by drawing with mouse or pen tablet.
This is the one example I did today. I drew my characters, Jaques and Touchstone from As You Like It.

I've been meaning to upload these for a while... they are sketches of Caliban from Shakespeare's The Tempest, illustrated by Paul Duffield.

Hello all! I though I should drop in here and let the community know that I have now signed up to start work on one of SMH's next super adaptations - Much Ado About Nothing! Something a little more light hearted than my earlier offering and I can't wait to see what wonderful Richard Appignanesi comes up with for the script abridgement.
Some character work is already done, so you'll be able to spot snippets as they appear. I will start using the trusty ol' selfmadehero Livejournal progress blog… Continue

Once you've got your fresh copies of Julius Caesar and Macbeth you might like to download a handy glossary for free from www.mangashakespeare.com
Here is what they look like:
Last night I went to Shakespeare's Globe on London's Southbank to see the play King Lear. I took a picture so you could see what it's like inside if you haven't been. There are loads of standing tickets for £5 every summer season but I would recommend buying a seated ticket as the plays are long and it can mean you don't enjoy the play if your legs hurt.
If you have seen King Lear or you know the play, then yo… Continue

Just done my first batch of amends for Macbeth. All in all there was very little to change and most were speech bubble placements and continuity things. However one was a bit more major. Basically I got mixed up with who the two sleepy looking charatcres should be in the pages below. I found a source on the internet (Never trust the internet) that said they were Malcolm and Donaldbain, the kings sons, where as really they are the kings guards. This got missed at the t…
Okay, so first post. As you may have gathered, I'm currently working on the Manga Shakespeare version of Macbeth. Things are coming along really well. I've done a total of 109 pages so far and I've got 93 left. I've enjoyed every second of it and I can't wait to see the book in print. Over the next couple of months I'll be posting concept art and thumbnails for pages, as well as a few finished pieces like the one below to g…

I got those Shakespeare Mangas (Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Richard III, Tempest) 2 days ago and I love them! I hope in this community we will be able to chat about new Shakespeare Mangas - we're lucky he wrote so many plays, aren't we? =^.^=
I hope that the tragedy of Macbeth will be among the next published books. I just love the story of Macbeth and I can imagine the scenes with those witches could be quite interesting... ^_^ Continue
Ok, so I started with the Introduction and I must admit, I was beginning to think this was a book purely for Film Studies students or at least Shakespeare enthusiasts. The language style is what I would call 'academic'.
However...I read on and, depite my apprehensions, the first chapter, on Performance, is an interesting disscussion of different interpretations of Hamlet on film.
I read on........will let you know how it goes! Continue

The Globe are touring the country with Romeo and Juliet, me thinks perhaps I should go when they're in london - at Lords Cricket Ground of all places!
As i was browsing their educational resource site, globelink, I was intrigued and amused to find that you can 'ADOPT AN ACTOR' - yes, really. Now I have seen it all!
Thought this was quite cool, the diary of Anne Frank in Manga form! You can get it at Amazon for under a fiver! What a great way of bringing it to life!!
Hey, this site is really cool! Its like a huge online drawing competition. You can view posted pics and rate them. You can even post some yourself. And they have a Manga/Anime section.
Its really cool, you get to see the pics being drawn too. And they even have drawing Tutorials, including a Manga one! I could spend hours messing around on this site, mind you the drawing tools aren't that easy to use, at least not for amateurs like me! Continue

Man oh man, my first blog. That's kind of sad, because I'm 17 and..
well anyways. I just bought Manga Hamlet yesterday, read the whole

Hamlet I must say is much more attractive than the Hamlet I drew for an

I was walking from SMH HQ to Oxford Circus this morning along Portland Place, past the BBC's Broadcasting House. I looked across the road at the cranes and the big hole directly behind the BBC building and noticed that my view was blocked by a huge hoarding covered in tiny cartoon faces.

The Cambridge Shakespeare Festival 2007 is in full swing and expects to invite around 25,000 visitors during the summer season.
The Festival has a policy of stripping away 'unnecessary theatrical artifice and gimmickry', so say their website, and are performed outdoors in 'full period costume with live Elizabethan music'.
Many of the plays plays below have already been turned into Manga Shakespeares and perhaps more of these will follow...
If you go to the festival keep an eye out for Manga S… Continue
